Wynn Holmes
Creating bold visceral works known for their percussive energy, punk spirit, and intricacy, Wynn Holmes’ choreographic work is marked by a mixture of athletic rigour and experimentation. With a background in traditional Irish dance, Theater Jazz, and Hip-Hop, her work combines elements of folk and street dance structures that are manipulated and abstracted through a contemporary lens by the dancers she collaborates with.
Her creative practice traverses choreography, installation, and sound, and is an expression of her lifelong interest in movement, music, and body-mind practices. In 2014, she was introduced to Jessica Fecarotta’s approach to embodied anatomy and dance inspired by the Lilian Arlen Method, which propelled her further fascination with movement research and somatic studies. She continues to deepen these practices under the guidance of Jessica Fecarotta and since 2019 has been studying Body-Mind Centering with Bonnie Bainbridge.
Creating for both stage and film, and in gallery and public settings, her work has been exhibited and performed internationally at Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, Fondation Pernod Ricard, Théâtre national de la Colline, Beaux-Arts de Paris, La Seine Musicale, Le Générateur, Cannes Film Festival (France), Place des Arts, Centre Phi, Société des arts technologiques, Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, Théâtre ESPACE GO, Centre du Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui, Théâtre de Quat’Sous, Galerie de l’UQAM (Canada), Lincoln Center, NEW INC. in collaboration with the New Museum, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Center for Performance Research (United States), and the Belgrade National Theatre (Serbia). Commercial choreography, performance, publication features and collaborations include: Louis Vuitton, GAP, Rag & Bone, SHOWstudio, Vogue magazine, V Magazine, i-D, W Magazine, DAZED, NOWNESS, and recording artists such as Madonna, Leon Bridges, The Kills, Miguel, J-Cole, RZA, Sleater Kinney, Cœur de pirate, FOXTROTT, Braids, Young Galaxy, CRi, and La Bronze.
She is the founder and director of LFDT / Lo Fi Dance Theory, an organization comprised of a contemporary dance company, an international class series, and a research platform that unites dance artists and multidisciplinary collaborators with the public. Creating a community of exchange that fosters dance-centered experiences across all disciplines, cultures and communities in Canada and internationally, LFDT / Lo Fi Dance Theory’s projects, classes, community outreach, and educational activities aim to push the boundaries between the arts and humanities, and between social phenomena and kinetic possibility.
